TUFTED TAPESTRY
This tufted wall tapestry is now on display at the Amsterdam Museum as part of the exhibition Women of Amsterdam – An Ode
Chief curator Imara Limon asked me to create an ode for the exhibition, and I chose to honor the women of the HTKB (Hollanda Türkiye Kadınlar Birliği), the Turkish Women’s Association founded in Amsterdam in 1975. Their story has long been overlooked in the narrative of Amsterdam’s feminist history, and I believe it’s time to reclaim their place in our collective memory.
Traditionally, tapestries have served as carriers of significant stories. This tapestry intertwines archival photo images of six female figures with symbols and a slogan of the HTKB, which advocated for their rights. The tapestry portrays the story of the HTKB as an integral part of Amsterdam’s history.
